The Waterfall Effect: A Savings Tactic

Dave Valdez

In a recent meeting, our co-founder, Laura Bruce, CFP®, described the ideal client that we serve.  A common theme kept popping up – we work well with busy professionals.  In addition to busy professionals that are mature in their career, we also work with busy young professionals, such as early career doctors, dentists, and lawyers. We’ve developed such an expertise for working with this group that we’re one of the select recommended advisors approved by White Coat Investor. This core group of professionals is typically underserved by wealth management firms. And ironically, the busy young professionals have the most at stake when starting in their career as their early decisions can have a significant impact over time.

Many of these professionals have spent most of their late twenties dogmatically pursuing additional credentials, training and fellowships – leaving very little time for financial planning.  As they near the completion of academia, reality sets in: looming student loan debt, relocation, insurance, risk management, education planning for young families, and creating a savings plan.

At Alaska Wealth Advisors, we’ve spent years refining our expertise. Not only do we review the above-mentioned topics, but we also counsel our young professionals on tax planning as they start to earn a paycheck.

Leah Levingston, CFP®, one of our esteemed Financial Advisors, helps guide our clients through difficult decisions by illustrating a “waterfall” and sequence of events that we often share with our clients.

By creating and simplifying a road map for our young, busy professionals, implementing the plan becomes that much easier. The figure is not all inclusive as clients that own practices and operate a small business have specific tax planning opportunities that we like to discuss further in our planning meetings.

If you’d like us to help create a road map for you, please reach out to us.  We are happy to connect you with a Certified Financial Planner® professional for a 15-minute call.
