On October 20, 2017, we held the first Empowered Teens Smart Women event. It was the culmination of one client comment, months of collaboration, and daily team hustle. It was held at the Bear Tooth Theatre with over one hundred fifty teen girls and their chaperones in attendance. The event included watching a documentary film, “The Empowerment Project”, listening to a panel discussion of prominent Alaska women, and interacting one-on-one with female leaders from our community about their professional journeys. The team that founded APCM Wealth Management for Individuals in 2014 intentionally designed our mission to empower clients around their finances. Through a shared vision, AWMI started an Empowered Women Smart Money series in 2014 to educate, uplift and celebrate the impact empowered women can have on their own future, their families and their communities.
Vision. The client comment went something like this, “These events (Empowered Women Smart Money) are great and all, but what about my daughters? I would like to include them too.” That one piece of feedback started a journey to explore what we have in our toolbox to empower young women. As advisors with the financial education and credentials, combined with our commitment to community, the only thing we had left to do was ask for help. Long story short, many women from a wide variety of disciplines answered our call, came together, and formed the first Teen Empowerment event committee. We are thankful for their support and direction in forming these annual events, which have grown in the last three years to impact over three hundred girls and fifty women leaders.
Embracing Technology. Our fourth annual Empowered Teens Smart Women event will be held via Zoom and offered to every teen girl and young woman in the state. Everyone knows COVID-19 took away normalcy. Although we are disappointed to not see everyone in person, we are thrilled girls across the state will be able to hear directly from Senator Murkowski and Dr. Zink, as well as participate in smaller group sessions with our staff and local female leaders in a variety of professions.
