Meet our Newest Intern- Tanner Dey

My name is Tanner Dey, and as a lifelong Alaskan I am proud to be able to return home and work throughout the summer. I am currently a senior at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, majoring in Finance with a minor in Economics. My college education and athletic career has given me the tools to create a balance of strengths, both interpersonal and educational, that will benefit me in this internship. During my time here, I look forward to diving into the world of personal finance and investment management.

My athletic career started at the early age of 3, when I played on my first Anchorage Hockey Association team called the Skyhawks. I immediately fell in love with the game and the competition and still play to this day. My approach has always been to not only build skills and knowledge of the game “my Hockey IQ” but to also foster a healthy team environment. Whether that’s always being first on the line and last off the ice or mentoring incoming freshman, I always make my teammates my priority. Once I became captain my leadership role included checking on my teammates’ schedules/classes and checking in with them on their mental health. My career in hockey has taught me great skills in organization, multi-tasking and relationship building, that I hope to translate to my future profession.

While being a student-athlete is fulfilling I also enjoy applying my education as a member of the Knight Investment Management club, my university’s school sponsored club. Our club manages over $3.5 million in endowment funds and is run by students with a faculty advisor. The Investment Policy we follow is based on modern portfolio theory and includes the philosophy of diversification among asset classes. Each semester the club selects members on the “macro team” to evaluate and promote any changes in the asset allocation. This includes researching markets and valuation of companies, leading us to adjust exposure to fixed income or equities. Calvin University takes a distribution from the fund each year, which most recently helped pay for the new business building on campus.

During my time with AWMI (APCM Wealth Management for Individuals) I am excited to learn more about the financial industry and what I can take into my future career. I look forward to learn more about client relations, financial planning and financial analysis tools that will help people in the future. This internship experience is giving me a great insight into my possible next steps in my career after college. Currently I am planning to pursue an MBA quickly after earning my bachelor’s degree so I can learn more about how a business functions and enter the industry as a leader. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to work as an intern for AWMI for the summer of 2022, and I look forward to learning more about how finance can impact my future and the people around me.
