We Can’t Run Our Businesses Without the University of Alaska

Let’s keep this incredible resource growing. You can help, and I have a prize for those that do!

Our company hires 2-3 professionals each year. Currently, we have a staff of about 26 people and we’re still growing. The Alaskans of our firm contribute significantly, not only to our economy, but also our quality of life. They volunteer their time to aid local causes and serve on the boards of the non-profits that make living here better for all. I myself was seeking a way to give back to the institution that has been such a good business partner to us and decided to join the UA Foundation board. Better yet, some seventy-five percent of our employees have achieved all or parts of their education through our only public university system, the University of Alaska. This metric speaks volumes that there is a fundamental need to feed the machine that fosters the talent in these now educated professionals.

I’d like to share some amazing things that I have learned about UA:

  • UA has a new Finance Lab that will combine classroom teaching with real-word experiences and collaborations. Opportunities like the Upstart Internships offered through the UAA Business Enterprise Institute pair entrepreneurial-minded students with local firms. In partnership with this program, we offer 3-6 paid internships annually. Importantly, we love bringing on UA students!

  • The University of Alaska Fairbanks is the global leader in Arctic Research.

  • Through their Finish College Alaska initiative, the University of Alaska Southeast encourages the more than 100,000 Alaskans who have some college credits but no degree to reach for their dreams by providing online degree programs.

  • Did you know that if you pay taxes in the state of Alaska, there is even a credit for helping the University? Check this out: https://alaska.edu/govrelations/state/aktaxcredit.php

While these great opportunities are setting up students for success in our state, budgets are being cut and corporate donations are down. We who rely on the system for our workers and keeping the talent in our state have an opportunity.

Now the ask… I bet that you have a UA story too: how you found your employees, or maybe what your UA education has done for you. I am so interested in hearing what you have to say. If you send me your story, I will in turn send you a fabulous prize. Please email me at laura@apcm.net.

I can’t wait to hear.

APCM will be at the UA Virtual Career Fair this Wednesday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We still have open group sessions available on Handshake, please feel free to send students our way.
