Laura Bruce, CFP®, ChFC®, was invited to present at the Petroleum Club of Anchorage’s popular Red Dress Networking Event this month. Her fresh approach to living and working “like a boss” workshop was a big hit with a full house of women in business. Sadie Bjornsen Maubet, Associate Financial Advisor, highlights the main take-aways from the evening.
Lady bossing is about leaning into the sisterhood that has kept us women going for centuries. It isn’t about reinventing the wheel, it is about fostering the inner strength we already possess. Below is a summary of the three key areas of fostering your inner boss.
Be the Boss of your life:
- As simplistic as it is, happiness is at the core of being the boss of your life.
- This means having the space to realize when you are happy, having the space to sit and enjoy the happiness, and having the space to know you will find it again when it is over.
- A study of centurions showed that the single most common theme that allowed humans to live beyond 100 was their social or business circle and their accountability to those within it.
- When you know you have a team that cares about you and depends on you, you are queued up to unlock health and happiness.
- The first step of living like a boss is getting a financial plan. Without a plan, you can’t have the confidence to know what you need and to not compromise.
Be the boss of your business:
- According to a recent Pew survey, the four most common themes of a good leader are honesty, intelligence, compassion and innovation.
- Many of these qualities are inherent, and most of society views these qualities as common characteristics of women.
- This leads us to wonder why only 33 of the fortune 500 companies are led by women.
- Using the skills means thinking before acting, developing measurable outcomes, and expecting them of not just yourself, but others.
Be the boss of your circle:
- Part of being the boss of your circle begins with networking. Building your circle starts with being relational and learning to both listen and share.
- When in doubt, start the conversation by learning who they are. From there you can determine what’s in it for them.
- Make networking simple, it is as easy as picking two people and setting up a coffee date. It doesn’t need to be calculated.
- As a busy, striving woman you have to be intentional about creating the space to allow networking and friendships to happen. You can’t wait for it to come to you.
In summary, don’t forget you are the boss. You were born with the skills, you just need to give yourself the permission and confidence to change the way society teaches us. Go out there and be the boss our world needs you to be.
